Alishan Tea Plantations
Alishan is famous for its majestic scenery and for its luscious greenery and the acclaimed oolong tea. Driving through the bamboo forests with the oolong plantations peppered along the number 18 provincial highway, you will meet with the scent of oolong tea, coming from the plantations as you drive along the road.
Amidst the cultural diversity of Taiwan, Alishan, home to the Tsou speaking cultural tribe, are oolong tea plantations that poses an impressive view, nestled in the mountains.
Grown at a mountain range of 1,000 to 2,000m above sea level, the oolong tea grown in this area is said to be outstanding for its strong aroma, said to have a taste note that includes a hint of fruity and flowery sweetness.
The conditions made idea for tea growing is also one that may drive tourists away though. Alishan's mountain range is said to be fertile ground for tea cultivation due to its wet and cold, foggy environment, which hydrates the plants. The intra-day fluctuations in temperatures also slows the tree's growth rate and allows the plant to concentrate more flavour in its leaves. The result is a soft texture on the leaf and a very fragrant tea whose scent is diffused through your journey along the highway.
Harvesting is done manually (hand picked) during April/May as well as August/September and then dried in the air or in a room that is well ventilated and cool, and later roasted in a special process to enhance the sweetness. This process involves breaking the leaves to hasten its oxidation process, and then followed by more bruising and crushing to release more aroma. This process is largely labour intensive and takes about 2 days to perform.
For tea enthusiasts, Alishan's tea can be purchased by tourists at the souvenir shops around the area, and also at the Alishan Forest Recreation Area. For tourists expecting to catch a glimpse of the harvesting, do note the seasons. If traveling as part of another itinerary to other parts of Taiwan, it would be preferred to travel around April/May because the weather is generally better and August/September period tends to be closer to the monsoon seasons.
